I am a 23-year-old Korean-Canadian neuroscientist, football player, and CEO of a biomedical device startup. Living as a young girl in South Korea, I was never given adequate support to develop and grow as an athlete due to gender bias against female athletes and the thought that I will never “make it”. After immigrating to Canada to play the game I love the most, I was bullied and discriminated against, only this time because I was an Asian girl who wasn’t fluent in English. My entire life has been a giant struggle against many levels of both implicit and explicit prejudice and stereotype, and it has enabled me to clearly see where this world needs help on. Although I was continuously encouraged to stick to the gender role of what a girl should play, playing football has always kept me motivated to try harder, pursue bigger, and never quit my dream. I applied to become an intern at adidas because I truly believe in the power of sports in changing people’s lives because it transcends gender, race, or social status. During my time in HR Strategy Diversity & Work-Life Integration team, I supported on topics including gender balance in senior leadership levels, unconscious bias, postpartum depression, and employee resource groups so that every single employee can reach his or her fullest personal and professional potential.
