Three Words with ...

Having started his journey on the professional tennis circuit at the age of 13, Dominic Thiem has since risen to number three in the world at just 24. Read on to find out what he believes has been instrumental in shaping his career and his mindset to date.

1. Positive

For me, being positive is really important. I think I’m positive by nature. It’s part of my character. Even when things are going pretty tough (like this year), it’s important not to let yourself be affected by the situation.

It’s kept me going through my whole career. It’s the most important thing for any athlete.

For me, being positive isn’t just about focusing on the good results, it’s about learning. What can I develop from my experiences? How can I use that to improve my game or my character?

It’s important to have success in results, of course, but I think it’s also important to try to be a better person every day.

2. Power

This is the very specific ability in sports. I’m a very powerful player on the court and it’s my most important weapon and without it I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I think while other players might not have as much power as I do, they have other great parts of their game that I don’t have.

Knowing your strengths also means knowing the weaker parts of your game, so yes, I know where my strengths are, and I know how to get the best out of them. I’ve worked hard on my power and I’m very happy to have it!

3. Natural

It’s important to stay the same person you’ve always been and not change unless it’s a move towards the positive. I think I’m pretty grounded and that’s how I want to stay. Humble.
